This was the culminating exhibition representing my time in the MFA program at Wayne State University. I wanted the experience to reflect the heart of my practice at that time, so rather than creating a static display of completed artworks, I developed a plan for working with the academic gallery space as a site for collaboration, experimentation and an expansive and iterative approach to creative expression. My
videos,
sculptures and
installations became the starting point for somewthing like a game of telephone, in which other participants were invited to offer their own take on the themes and imagery that permeated my video works, as well as other works in the exhibition space, which was shared with the three other members of my MFA cohort. The space hosted new installations by friends outside the program, as well as by students from programs across the university. My own Space Studio students contributed work as part of their intro to sculpture class, and the space also hosted a karaoke night, a couple student group meetings, and two workshops. Contributors’ names were listed in marker on a long sheet of paper at the entry to the space, and handwritten labels were added to the walls as new works were added to the space. In addition, a small altar acknowledged the influence and contributions of plant friends and other supportive non-human influences that insipred and supported the making of the work.
